APPLIED PHYSICS

This field of study is concerned with the applications of physics principles to develop innovative technological solutions for industrial, scientific and medical purposes. Specific research in this field includes theory, simulation, and instrumentation of electromagnetic wave propagation at microwave frequencies focusing on the development of microwave sensors for agricultural applications. There are also interests in the design and analysis of RF and microwave passive devices that include work on material selection and characterisation, circuits design, fabrication and testing of the final device.

Other research interests include fabrication and characterisation of photonic materials and sensors that are important in optical communication, and medical and bio-photonics applications.  Other emerging research work includes the development, simulation and analytical study of novel mid-infrared fiber laser sources that can emit laser at mid-infrared (2000 nm up to 3000 nm) wavelength regimes. Laser at these wavelengths have various newly emerging applications in the eye-safer region such as free-space optical communications, laser range-finding, bio-photonics optical sensing as well as in the military.
