MATERIALS SCIENCE

Materials science is an interdisciplinary field with strong connections to physics, chemistry, biology and the engineering fields concerned with the relationship between the structure and properties of materials.  This field is related to the design, extraction, synthesis, processing, properties, characterisation, and development of materials for technological applications. The classes of materials that are of importance include all natural and man-made materials. Specific materials of interest include advanced materials, biopolymers, magnetic materials, superconductors, ceramics, metals, biomaterials, inorganic materials, semiconductors and nanomaterials. The fundamental understanding of materials developed through materials science at the nano, micro and macro scales , ranging from examining and understanding the basic nature of materials  to maximising their use for applications will lead to new technological breakthroughs across all engineering disciplines that have energy, environmental, health, economic, and manufacturing issues relating to materials.

Dielectric studies focus on the complex permittivity of titanates, calcium copper titanate (CCTO), mullite and some magnetic materials such as nickel zinc ferrite and yttrium iron garnet. Evolution studies focus on the  microstructure and dielectric properties of these materials with the best composition with respect to frequency (40 Hz – 1 MHz in the low frequency region and 1 Mhz – 1.8 GHz in the microwave region), measuring temperatures, sintering temperatures, density, porosity, grain size (from nano to micron), charge carriers, conductivity and polarisation. The dielectric responses are mainly due to interfacial and dipolar polarisation. Analyses of complex permitivity, impedance, modulus, cole-cole, tan delta and modelling are conducted in the search of finding the best capacitive materials tailored to specific applications as multilayer capacitors and materials for capacitive sensors.
