PARASITOLOGY

The principal research areas include molecular biology and systematics, epidemiology, genetic characterisation, phylogenetic, antigenic variation and drug resistance in parasites infecting humans, companion animals, livestock and wildlife in the tropics. While research methods are founded on traditional techniques, advance molecular-based techniques are employed to characterise parasite cellular biology and determine interactions between parasite, host and environment. Among focus of study are determination of genetic variation among parasites and the role and influence of gene expression patterns in the dynamics of parasitaemia, immune response, resistance to chemotherapeutics, and cellular invasion. Research topics are on parasites of major veterinary and medical importance including new emerging parasitic diseases, zoonosis, and parasites with economic impacts on livestock, companion animals and wildlife.
