This field of study focuses on research and development of assessment and treatment modalities in psychiatric and psychological disorders. Neuropsychiatric disorders and -behavioral issues that impact on one’s life and daily functions have a significant impact on quality of life. The field is concerned with understanding human behaviour in the context of psychological health and illness. This field also covers areas such as how individuals cope with illness and chronic psychiatric diseases, psychological influences on the development of disease states, understanding and improving adjustment outside the mental healthcare settings, psychiatry of old age,  disorders in children and adolescents, adherence to treatment, determinants of health-related behaviours.  The study also involves understanding how individuals make sense of and react to mental health screening, symptoms, and illness; and the interaction between physical and mental disease in the broadest sense that includes psychosomatic medicine and psychological reactions to physical disorders. Research that improves our understanding and treatment of these problems is an important component that contribute towards improved treatments and care for people with mental health conditions, subsequently translating these findings into actual mental health service practice in Malaysia.
