KAJANG, 11 Mei (UPM) – Some 300 children from Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil Kajang were specially  taught how to care for their own safety on the roads in a programme by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).

These students were taught how to avoid accidents and injuries while walking or carrying out their daily activities, said programme leader,  Dr. Kulanthayan KC Mani.

The pedestrian safety campaign was jointly organized with the Road Safety Department (JKJR),  the Ministry of Transport Malaysia and the transnational courier service provider, FedEx Courier.

"This is one of the steps to deliver prevention messages to children and also to raise civic awareness among public to be more concerned about pedestrians’ safety, especially school children,"  he said at the launching of the programme to mark the 'Road Safety Week’ organized by United Nations (UN) on 11th May 2013.

He said programme was fully backed by the Safe Kids Worldwide, a non-governmental organization based in the United States, through FedEx, the main sponsors for the pedestrian safety programmes among children

The five main activities carried out by Safe Kids Worldwide are prevention from road accidents, awareness on water and fire safety, poisoning and falls inside or outside of schools, playground and so on.

Among the other highlights of the programme was the opening of a new pedestrian walkway for the students of the school by the Director-General of Road Safety Department  (JKJR), Datuk Dr. Tam Wen Wah.

Also present were  Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Industry and Community Relations), Prof. Dr. Ir. Renuganth Varatharajoo and Director General of Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), Prof. Dr. Wong Shaw Voon.

Meanwhile,  Farhan Ahmad Radhi, a student studying for his B.Sc  in Environmental and Occupational Health who was one of the volunteers, said that this program had educated him to be extra careful when walking on the road.

"I hope other pedestrians in Malaysia will be equipped with more safety facilities, especially the disabled people (OKU),” he said.

His friend, Jacquline Lim Sue Jac Lim said this was her first experience in attending the programme and she was able to acquire new knowledge in terms of pedestrian safety among children.

“Attending this programme has given me a chance to apply my theoretical studies learnt during lectures in class. I am able to help in terms of safety measures, especially for students,” she said. – UPM
