KUCHING, 30 March (UPM) – The Putra Arts practitioners of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) had a taste of sweet success when they emerged as the overall champions of the arts and cultural activities held by the Cultural Council of Malaysian Universities (MAKUM) 2013.

They were presented with a golden drum for their victory at a glittering prize-giving ceremony at Pullman Kuching here today.

The coveted gold drum award is bestowed on the public university that has outshone the others in all the competitions and festivals organised by MAKUM throughout 2011 to 2012.

This success would not be possible without the sweat and tears of all the Putra Arts practitioners who had shown their highest commitment and devotion to the arts and culture, said Encik Sharudin Sahrani, head of the Innovation and Creative Unit of the Student Affairs Division.

He said it would be difficult to realise such a success without the cooperation and teamwork of the members.

In addition, they had not wasted the support and opportunities to excel given by Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Fauzi Ramlan when he was the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Alumni before his promotion to helm UPM.

At the ceremony, UPM also nominated two students who were active in the arts and culture for the Gold Bonang Male Award (Fakhri Mohd Hanif of the Agriculture Faculty) and the Gold Bonang Female Award (Fatin Abd Hazwani Razak of the Science Faculty).

They also nominated the Putra Arts practitioners for the Gambang Mustika award which is given to any group, body or club for being the most outstanding in MAKUM activities throughout 2011-2012.

Present at the ceremony was the Head of Student Development of the Student Affairs Division, Dahlan Ismail Abu Bakar.

The event was organized by Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) which was also the Secretariat of MAKUM 2011-2012.

Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) is the next Secretariat of MAKUM for the 2013 to 2014 term.
