Serdang, Dec 18 (UPM) - Innoven Group (M) Sdn. Bhd., consisting of bachelor of Food Science and Technology final year students, Faculty of Food Science and Technology (FSTM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), was crowned champion in the New Product Introduction Day competition with frozen lemang (glutinous rice cooked in a hollowed bamboo stick), also known as Palmix.

Group leader, Kwong Ying Bing, said Palmix had a distinct identity as the traditional lemang preparation was time consuming and served only with spicy meat dish or rendang.

"Palmix is the latest reinvention of lemang with three filling variations, anchovy paste, coconut and red beans," he said.

Kwong Ying Bing, said the uniqueness of Palmix was instead of using coconut milk, it used palm milk due to its low cholesterol content and could last for a year without adding any preservatives.

"Palmix is an environment-friendly product since it uses green technology such as banana leaves for its packaging," said the final-year student who was assisted by Lai Siao Ching, Nur Fatihah Jafarah, Nur Raihana Azman, Hussam Hussin, Chevia Nadia Laksmisari and Intan Zafirah Zainal.

Innoven Group (M) Sdn. Bhd. took home a cash prize of RM400 and hampers, presented by Putra Science Park Director, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Samsilah Roslan, accompanied by FSTM Dean, Prof. Dr. Hasanah Mohd Ghazali.

A total of eight new products successfully produced by eight groups competed, comprising UPM final year students through the New Food Product Development course.

Among other products that used various technologies in their productions were vegetable balls, mixed fruit juice, mango pudding, butter, noodles, candy, herbs and chocolate milk.
