SERDANG – Graduates of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) are urged to raise their integrity and avert corruption once they embark into work life due to its potential as a social illness which contributes to a disaster to the country.

UPM Pro Chancellor, Tan Sri Lim Ah Lek hopes that UPM graduates will practice good values and affirm that corruption tends to tarnish the reputation of the university.

"Besides the government, graduates and society in general should play a role in raising good values.

"If the seeds are carefully nurtured at the fundamental level (UPM), they will definitely grow to be strong shady trees, " he said during the fourth session of the 37th UPM Convocation Ceremony, at the Great Hall, Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Culture and Arts Centre, Universiti Putra Malaysia here.

Tan Sri Lim in his speech is also concerned with the study conducted by Transparency International-Malaysia (TI-M) on 1,000 Malaysians aged 16 years and above, which resulted in 70 percent of students both in secondary and university level are inclined to accepting bribes.

In the meantime, he hopes UPM will strengthen the blue ocean strategy approach to create niche areas that support the country's agricultural agenda such as food security, agribiotechnology, agriculture and veterinary science.

"If a strong collaboration between UPM and government agencies such as MARDI, MPOB can be established as well as with other local or international agricultural industry experts, the country's agricultural agenda can be driven for the global market and not necessarily only to developed countries, " he said.
