PUTRAJAYA, March 4 – Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), has chosen Faculty of Agriculture, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) to implement the ASEAN-Japan collaborative programme in promoting the establishment of Global Food Value Chain (GFVC).

UPM has been chosen based on its strengths in research and teaching in the agricultural fields and agro-based industries.

The agreement between the two parties was inked by UPM Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dato' Dr. Mohd Fauzi Ramlan and Minister and Mission Deputy Chief, Japan Embassy, Yoshinori Kodama during the opening ceremony of the “ASEAN-JAPAN Cooperation Project for Human Resource Development in Food-related Areas through Partnership with Universities in ASEAN Region” symposium.

In promoting GFVC, MAFF took the initiative to hold discussions and cooperation with government sectors, industry players and academics in addressing food security and poverty issues in the Asian region.

Prof. Dato' Dr. Mohd Fauzi, said UPM was pleased to be opted as the higher education institution (IPT) from Malaysia to participate in the programme.

"It is an honor to UPM to be a part of this Japan-led initiative in expanding products and technologies related to food industry through this collaborative programme among ASEAN universities.

"The programme includes the exchange of information and experience between Japanese agribusiness and food entrepreneurs with university students in ASEAN countries," he said.

It was a part of the GFVC establishment campaign in Malaysia.
