MICOLLAC ‘12: Connecting academicians with society


SERDANG, 10 July – The 7th Malaysia International Conference on Languages, Literatures and Cultures (MICOLLAC) 2012, organised by the Department of English, Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication (FBMK) of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM)  and held on 9 and 10 July 2012 was to enhance understanding of graduate research, philosophy, thinking and work.

The conference chairman, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wan Roselezam Wan Yahya said the conference theme, ‘Research rigour, practicality and relevance in current context’ was  apt in view of  the challenges that researchers and academicians face.

“Worldwide researchers have always generated ideas and invented something new to meet the public needs but their inventions had often been ignored.



“The public believed that activities related to the academic world would only revolve within the universities and. their research findings are considered as reference sources significant  only to academia,” she explained.

She emphasized that in fact, academicians need to evaluate the relevance of every research finding to meet the public needs and understanding.

Dr. Wan said that MICOLLAC 2012 was the ideal platform to discuss critical issues related to language, literature and culture and how these elements could help the global community in the economic, political and social structure.

“MICOLLAC brings together,  local and foreign experts who are academicians, educators, lecturers, media practitioners, politicians, policy presenters, researchers, writers, and language lovers,” she added.

In the two-day conference, 150 local and foreign presenters presented their research findings and shared with participants at the various plenary and parallel sessions their ideas.  



University Putra Malaysia (UPM) Vice Chancellor, Dato’ Ir. Dr. Radin Umar Radin Sohadi viewed the conference as a tribute to the knowledge tradition in culture, language, and literature areas.

“It is in line with FBMK’s aspiration to be a centre of excellence in the field of language, literature, and culture at higher educational level. The faculty’s active involvement in such an  event will enhance the work of academicians and help the university achieve world-class status.

“Through respectable research and knowledge tradition, we can contribute meaningfully to the country and the world,” he said.

MICOLLAC 2012 was attended by researchers from Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Iran and Kazakhstan who presented 150 papers and posters.

Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah officiated at the commencement of the conference.
