PUTRA SARJANA: CERTIFICATE PRESENTATION CEREMONY

Serdang, 10 March 2015 – A certificate presentation ceremony for participants of Academic Career Preparatory Certificate 1 and 2 was held in School of Graduate Studies 1, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Serdang. The event was held for celebrating 63 recipients who completed the courses successfully.

Academic Career Preparatory Certificate 2 was organized in November 2014 followed by Academic Career Preparatory Certificate 1 in December 2014. Both groups of courses are for the students who wish to pursue a career in academia. The students were introduced to the basic needs of the job, its responsibilities, writing and networking, among others. Two invited guest facilitators were Professor Margaret Kiley from Australian National University, Australia and Dr. Vijay Mallan from University of Otago, New Zealand.

Both groups of courses are lectures on relevant topics. Towards the end of the courses, participants were evaluated by the facilitators. They were evaluated either with individual tasks commissioned to them or written tests. Those who passed all the evaluations would be awarded with a certificate of achievement.

“There is also increasing expectations from employers upon university to produce holistic graduate.” said Professor Dato’ Dr. Mad Nasir Shamsudin, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and International). It requires the university to come up with new strategies and initiatives such as a full-fledged learning support programme, Putra Sarjana (developed in-house). “Putra Sarjana is one of many undertakings by UPM and we are fully committed towards realising the aspiration of the university inclusive of all its stakeholders.” said Prof. Dr. Bujang Kim Huat, Dean of School of Graduate Studies (SGS).

SGS and the academia as a whole hope both groups of courses will assist students to become excellent academicians in the future and contribute to the world society.
