Three UPM scholars conferred Top Research Scientists Malaysia 2014

KUALA LUMPUR - Three lecturers from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), have been recognised among other 24 scientists as the Top Research Scientists Malaysia (TRSM) & Fellows 2014 by the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) recently.

The recipients were Prof. Dr. Jinap Selamat from the Faculty of Food Science and Technology (TRSM & Fellows 2014), Prof. Dr. Ir. Mohd Zainal Abidin Abdul Kadir, Deputy Dean (Research & Innovation), Faculty of Engineering (TRSM 2014) and Institute of Bioscience Director, Prof. Dr. Abdul Rahim Omar (TRSM 2014).

Each received a recognition certificate and a trophy from the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato' Sri Najib Tun Abdul Razak in conjunction with ASM Fellowship and Confernment Dinner held at JW Mariott Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.

TRSM has been organised by the Academy of Sciences Malaysia since 2010 to recognise scientists and researchers in Malaysia who are actively involved in research and development activities that contribute to the transformation of the nation’s socio-economic development.

Until today, TRSM database has collected experts in multi-disipilinary fields such as agricultural sciences, science and technology, biological sciences, engineering sciences, forestry sciences, humanities, marine sciences and material sciences.

In 2012, UPM dominated the recognitions with a total of 12 out of 27 recipients.

Prof. Dr. Jinap Selamat

Areas of Expertise: Food Safety and Food Science

Chemical contamination in food (Food Chemical contaminants)

Her expertise in the Food Science and Food Safety industry has garnered her to come out with 24 H-index, 1834 citations and more than 200 research articles published in the journal International Statistical Institute (ISI).

Meanwhile, she also plays an important role at the Food Safety Research Center (FOSREC) as its Journal of Food Research chief editor.

Recognition of TRSM 2014

1) Prof. Dr. Abdul Rahman Omar, Director of the Institute of Bioscience

Areas of Expertise: Animal Pathogens - Immunogenomics

He utilises his expertise in the research of animal pathogens immunogenomics, where he leads a working group on the development of diognostics, vaccines and therapeutics.

The group has also developed a PCR-based diagnostic kit which is currently being evaluated by an industrial partner for commercialisation purposes.

2) Prof. Ir. Dr. Mohd Zainal Abidin, Deputy Dean (Research & Innovation) Faculty of Engineering

Areas of Expertise: High Voltage Engineering, Electromagnetic Compatibility and Power System transients

His expertise focuses on High Voltage Engineering which studies the international standards compatibility on the electromagnetic development and lightning protection.

He also collaborates with the Energy Commission of Malaysia in publishing circulars and reference books pertaining to lightning protection for engineers, consultants and organisations in the country as well as abroad.

He is also an Advisor and Expert Panel for various institutions such as MERCY Malaysia, Energy Commission of Malaysia and the Ministry of Education.
