SERDANG - Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has awarded incentives to its three athletes who competed in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, recently.

This is the first time that UPM has bestowed such an incentive.

Malaysian diver, Cheong Jun Hoong who clinched silver in the women’s 10m platform synchronised, received RM4000 cash and a grant allocation for an oversea mobility programme.  She also competed in the women’s synchronised 3 metre springboard and 3 metre individual springboard.

Vice-Chancellor of UPM, Prof. Datin Paduka Dr. Aini Ideris said the incentives served as a motivation and an encouragement for successful athletes who had made the country, proud.

“Every year, UPM is involved in many major tournaments, both at national and international levels.

“This is one of the university’s incentives to honour the sacrifices of athletes who have to strike a balance between academics and sports for the sake of the country and the university,” she said.

Cheong Jun Hoong, 26, said she did not expect to have received the incentive and the opportunity to finish her studies in a foreign university.

“I feel so blessed and am grateful to UPM for its support and privileges accorded to UPM athletes.

"I want to share this incentive with my family members who have made lots of sacrifices in supporting my career as a national diver,” the Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication student said.
