SERDANG, Nov 19 – The Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences (BioTech) of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM recently organised The Awesome Microbes Carnival to encourage school students and the public to take sciences seriously at the university.

The event was jointly organized by the Department of Microbiology, (Biotech), Putra Elite (PE) and the Malaysian Biotechnology Information Centre (MABIC).

UPM Dean of BioTech, Prof. Datin Paduka Dr. Khatijah Mohd Yusoff said the event served as a teaching and service learning platform in sharing of knowledge in microbiology with students and members of the public in general.

“The students from Semester One to Semester Seven participated in the event which has brought much fun by focusing on the good, the bad and the ugly of the microorganisms. There were also demonstrations to the public on the universal and common microbiology,” she said.

She added that microorganisms were involved in the efficient cycling of nutrients and energy and that “we have learnt to use their natural metabolism to create new forms of food like yoghurt, fertilizers and animal feed.”

The Head of Microbiology Department, Dr. Wan Zuhainis Saad said the objective of the carnival was to empower students’ learning and at the same time to create awareness in science education.

“The involvement of all microbiology students will create a positive learning environment filled with excitement and passion for learning. I would like to congratulate and express my appreciation to the organising committee for their contribution in making the carnival a success,” she said.

The Chairman of the organising committee, Radin Shafierul Radin Yahaya agreed that the event had given a clear view on how significant microorganisms were to human and that it was a true gifted miracle as it opened up to many potentials that will propagate the course of humanity.

“There are good and bad organisms, not all of them are harmful, I am sure the event will have a positive impact on the public and we will be able to achieve our objective,” he said. - UPM
