UPM organizes First Semester 2016/2017 Session Inter-College Sports Tournament

SERDANG, Sept 24 – Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) organized an Inter-college Sports Tournament (SUKOL) to identify young sports talents.

UPM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohammad Shatar Sabran said through such championships, students will have the opportunity to be selected to represent UPM in sports tournaments organized by Higher Education Ministry (KPT).

“SUKOL helps in building soft skills in students and it also serves as a platform for students to represent this university in tournaments such as those organized by the Malaysian Universities Sports Council (MASUM) and Higher Education Institutions Sports (SUKIPT),” he said.

Chairman of UPM Sports Centre, Dr. Hanafi Ayub, said SUKOL, a two-phase tournament, featured 36 events, including rugby, football, netball, bowling and athletics.

He also said the Sports Center will be organizing a baseball sports training course for three days with the cooperation of Japan.

Meanwhile, UPM Sultan Alaeddin Suleiman Shah Residential College (Kosas) emerged the overall champion in a marching parade which was held at the opening of the tournament.

The opening ceremony began with a procession of marching teams from 17 UPM residential colleges, followed by beating of the drums by St. John Naval Cadet Band.

The tournament pledge was led by Rio Olympics athletes, Cheong Jun Hoong, Zaidatul Husniah Zulkifli and Johnathan Guanjie. The opening ceremony was made the more merrier with a band performance by St John Institution Kuala Lumpur. – UPM
