KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 10 – A Memorandum of Understanding on Energy Performance Contract (EPC) sealed between Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and SIAZ Holding Berhad will see that electricity cost could be reduced by 30 per cent or RM1.3 million each year.
UPM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohd Fauzi Ramlan said the EPC will be implemented at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FPSK) since the faculty consumed high energy usage.
“UPM has taken a pro-active step in carrying out cost-reduction and energy efficiency initiatives in view of the anticipated increase in the use of electricity in the future.
“Indirectly, this measure will help reduce UPM expenditure and the budget can be used for other pressing needs.
“The implementation of energy-reduction move through EPC has placed UPM in a comfort zone as the implementation cost will be borne by the company,” he said.
He also said UPM planned to carry out EPC in the whole campus after an efficiency implementation assessment which showed that based on an average, the FPSK electricity bill totalled RM380,000 a month.
“We hope that this cooperation will enable us to save electricity bill up to RM1.3 million a year,” he said.
Chief Executive Officer of Kumpulan SIAZ Holding, Asrul Muniff Azizan, said an energy auditing was carried out where the interim audit report had been presented to UPM.
“The cost of implementing EPC will be borne by us and if there is no proof of saving, the company will not be getting any single payment from UPM.
“On the other hand, if the electricity bill shows an increase after the implementation, the company will pay for the difference to UPM,” he said.
At the ceremony, UPM was represented by Prof. Dato Mohd Fauzi while SIAZ Holding Berhad by Asrul Muniff, witnessed by Energy, Green Technology and Water Secretary-General, Datuk Loo Took Gee -UPM
