UPM Students Emerge Runners-up in Startup Weekend Johor Bahru Mega @ UTM 2016

SKUDAI – A group of Bachelor of Computer Science (Software Engineering) students from the Faculty of Science Computer & Information Technology (FSKTM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), emerged runners-up in a Startup Weekend Johor Bahru Mega @ UTM 2016 under the “Internet of Things” category recently.

Muhammad Nur Syafiq Sinwan, Soon Joon Wai, Muhammad Nur Sufi Abu Bakar, and Mohamad Faizal Abdul Karim, took home prizes worth RM1,000, an Arduino Starter Kit and a ‘Cloud Storage’.

The innovative idea presented by the group came in the form of an “on-board diagnostics” car system that could be plugged directly through the mobile application. The product’s name is ‘VePA’ (Vehicle Personal Assistant).

The contest was organized by UTM Technology Entrepreneurship Centre (UTMTEC) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), with the cooperation of Higher Education Ministry, Wadhwani Foundation and The Hangout.

The contest took place at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Skudai, from April 29 to May 1. Participants were allotted 54 hours to realize their ideas, assisted by their mentors to convince the judges.

The objective of the competition was to produce young technopreneurs under the scopes of  'Internet of Things' and 'Social Innovation'.

The programme involved students from local higher learning institutions (IPTA), software designers and engineers who were experts in their own fields from all over Malaysia. – UPM.
