UPM students to Recycle & Bicycle to save the Environment

By Stephanie Shalini Sukumaran

Kuala Lumpur, 20 Feb
– Universiti Putra Malaysia students are taking a novel way to save the environment by recycling before they get to bicycle around their sprawling campus.

They have to recycle their bottles and aluminum cans to earn points which will be used to rent bicycles if they do not want walk as the university moves to make the campus a cycling zone while fostering active lifestyle.

The ‘Recycle to Cycle” project is the brainchild of the Head of Biology Department of UPM’s Faculty of Science, Prof. Ahmad Ismail who, together  with the faculty students, are taking the lead to cut down carbon emissions and waste.

The two-year project, the first of its kind, was launched on campus on 20th February 2013 with the collaboration of Coca-Cola Malaysia which provided UPM with a grant of RM750,000 from Coca-Cola Foundation.  The funding  goes towards the bicycles and equipment, recycling centers, project materials and overall running of the project.

UPM Vice Chancellor Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Fauzi Ramlan said at the launching that at present, only the students and staff of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering practised walking and cycling to their lecture halls.

“We are targeting to have 3, 500 students cycling and walking in the campus by this September,” he said.

General Manager of Coca-Cola Malaysia-Singapore-Brunei Region Ms. Gill McLaren who flagged off the event said that this project was the first of its kind in Malaysia and was in line with the focus of Coca-Cola in building a sustainable community through environmental conservation.

Proceeds from the recycled materials would be reinvested in order for the project to be sustainable. – Ends
