KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 10: Researchers of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) win gold award under the Copyright category during the National Intellectual Property award presentation held in conjunction with 2015 National Intellectual Property Day.

This is the first gold to have been won by UPM under that category of the National Intellectual Property Award which was introduced in 2006.

The group of researchers comprised Faculty of Human Ecology lecturer, Associate Prof Dr Mohamad FazliSabri, and Teaching Services officer, Nurhayatul Nira Ramli and Rozita Wahab came up with an innovation ‘Profesor Bijak Wang', an initiative to instill awareness among the public on the practice of wise and prudent financial management.

They received a trophy, RM10,000 cash, medal and  certificate from Prime Minister, Dato' Seri Najib Razak at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) today.

Also present were Deputy Prime Minister, Dato' Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Minister of Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Minister, Dato' Hamzah Zainuddin.

Two nominations by UPM were also listed for the finals under the organization and the patent categories.

‘Profesor Bijak Wang’ one of the items from ‘Kit Bijak Wang’ which features 10 interactive yet interesting games. The activities in all games were organized in stages, from easy to the most difficult levels for children to muster the topics based on their capability and skills.

‘Profesor Bijak Wang’ is a financial educational kit which is the first of its kind in Malaysia, developed by UPM researchers for the growing of children, aged six to 12.

Dr  Mohamad Fazli expressed his gratitude for winning the prestigious award, describing the achievement as historic as this was the first time that UPM had won the Copyright category.

He said ‘Profesor Bijak Wang’ was a board game made locally on financial research which could be beneficial in this era where reports of people going bankrupt were rampant.

“This serves as a pro-active step to teach children on financial management, how to go about saving their money, indirectly instilling the culture and habit of saving from a tender age,” he said.

He also expressed his gratitude to Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohd Azmi Mohd Lila and Putra Science Park Director, Associate Prof Dr. Samsilah Roslan and her deputy, Dr. Zahira Mohd. Ishan (Technology Transfer and Protection of Intellectual Property Division) and Dr. Mohamad Fakri Zaky Ja`afar (Marketing of Innovation and Promotion Division) who had nominated his innovation for the event.

Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohd Azmi, meanwhile, said UPM was proud of the “golden” achievement, the first time to have been won under the Copyright category.

He said the research efforts, together with Putra Science Park through Innohub programme which started two years ago, had borne fruits.

“So far, several established organizations have indicated their interests with the kit and we are in the process of negotiating with them,” he said. – UPM.
