SERDANG, Dec 1- Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) recorded an excellent achievement when it was ranked first among local universities, and ranked 89th out of 300 international universities in the Times Higher Education BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings 2017.
Its 89th ranking accomplishment saw UPM climbing up 14 steps compared to its 103rd position last year.
The rankings, announced through Times Higher Education’s official website, also listed two other universities from Malaysia as among the world’s 100 top universities; that is Universiti Teknologi Petronas (91st) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (100th), while Universiti Sains Malaysia in 114th spot, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (136th), Universiti Utara Malaysia (201-250), and Universiti Teknologi Mara (251-300).
The rating was published in the website of The World University Rankings https://www.timeshighereducation.com/world-university-rankings/2017/brics-and-emerging-economies.
UPM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datin Paduka Dr. Aini Ideris described the achievement as very meaningful and outstanding as UPM had been listed as among 100 global top institutions of higher learning in the ranking involving 41 countries.
"This ranking is among the benchmarks for UPM for its long list of achievements in research and innovation as more than 60% of evaluation criteria is focused on research components,” she said.
The assessment was carried out among universities in developing countries where resources and economies were on par with Malaysia.
The ranking assessment involved 41 universities, including those from BRICS nations, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, and others categorized as developing countries (Emerging Economies) by FSTE. - UPM
