KUALA LUMPUR: Two university students have emerged as the champions of the Umno essay writing competition in the Bahasa Malaysia and English categories, which was held in conjunction with the party’s 71st Anniversary today.

The students, Muhammad Farhan Riduan of Universiti Putra Malaysia and Mohd Hazman Hashim of UniKL were cheered by thousands of Umno members when their names were announced during the celebrations at Bukit Jalil National Stadium tonight.

Farhan, a PhD student, and Hazman, each received RM5,000 and a trophy, which was presented by Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The ceremony also saw the Federal Territories Umno contingent being named the overall champion at the party’s sports carnival organised by Umno Youth between May 9 and today. The contingent received RM50,000 and an Umno President Trophy.

Coming in on the second spot was the Selangor Umno contingent, which received RM30,000 and a trophy, while Terengganu Umno received RM20,000 and a trophy at the third place.

The Johor and Pahang Umno contingents shared the fourth place and the RM10,000 prize.

Also present at the awards presentation ceremony were Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, Secretary-General Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, and Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, among others.
