Every human being communicates every day, whether through face-to-face conversations, telephone calls, messages, social media posts, or online comments. Although words may seem simple, they have the power to influence emotions, shape relationships, and affect the harmony of society. A kind word can bring comfort and encouragement, while a careless or hurtful word can leave a lasting emotional impact. Therefore, being mindful of what we say and write is especially important in today’s digital age, where information can spread within seconds.
Words can either build people up or bring them down. Encouraging words can give someone confidence when they are struggling, while harsh criticism can make a person feel discouraged and hurt. A simple compliment, sincere appreciation, or thoughtful piece of advice can strengthen relationships and create a positive environment.
In Islam, speech holds great importance because every word spoken by a person is accountable before Allah SWT. Muslims are encouraged to use their speech for beneficial purposes and avoid words that may cause harm to others.
There are several forms of harmful speech that should be avoided, including:
Such behaviour can damage friendships, families, workplaces, and communities. Once hurtful words are spoken, they may be difficult to take back.
In the digital era, guarding our speech also means guarding our fingers before typing. Every message, comment, photograph caption, or social media post can reach a large audience. A careless post may be shared repeatedly and remain online for a long time.
Before posting or sharing something, ask yourself:
“Is it true? Is it beneficial? Is it necessary? Could it hurt someone?”
If the answer is uncertain, choosing not to share it may be the wiser decision.
Islam encourages believers to speak good words or remain silent when they have nothing beneficial to say. Good speech includes giving sincere advice, expressing gratitude, offering encouragement, apologising when necessary, and praising others sincerely. A kind word may appear small, but it can bring happiness and comfort to someone who needs it.
Ultimately, the way we speak reflects our character and the condition of our hearts. Being careful with our words does not mean that we should remain silent at all times, but rather that we should learn to communicate with wisdom, honesty, kindness, and respect.
