UPM PhD Students Win Second and Third Places in the 2021 National Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition

Can you present your PhD thesis in just three minutes? A typical dissertation might contain more than 50,000 words and would take hours to present. Due to the worldwide coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, increasing social distancing measures and restrictions on public gatherings and travel, the 2021 National 3MT Competition was hosted virtually by the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Selangor. 19 universities took part in the competition, with a total of 50 contestants from various disciplines on June 9, 2021. Three categories are contested: Science, Social Science and Engineering & Technology. UPM took home the second and third prizes for each category.

The 3MT, founded by the University of Queensland (UQ) is a competition that requires students to present their research to a lay audience in just three minutes. It was invented at UQ in 2008 by Emeritus Professor Alan Lawson, who conceived the idea during Queensland’s drought when most showers had a three-minute timer.

Diana Suhaiza Said, a PhD student from the Institute of Bioscience won the second prize in the Science category with her presentation entitled “No More Anal Digging in Prostate Cancer Diagnosis”. Her research focuses on exosome characterization and elucidating the roles of exosomal protein biomarkers in prostate cancer cells' invasiveness and migration, to assist in prostate cancer diagnosis. Diana Suhaiza is supervised by Dr. Armania Nurdin of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Shahrill Ramli @ Romli, a PhD student from the Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication took the third prize in the Social Science category for his presentation entitled “Mastering the Mighty Godzilla: Tun Mahathir, the Malaysian Hercules?” which is based on the ongoing thesis entitled "A Rhetorical Analysis on Tun Mahathir's Selected Speeches During His Political Hiatus (2004-2018)".
