Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA)





School of Graduate Studies (SGS), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) is pleased to announce that the application for Graduate Research Assistantships (GRA) is now open for local and international students for the Second Semester 2023/2024 from 02 – 22 January 2024


Application Eligibility:

  1. Applications are open to all local and international prospective students, who have received an offer of admission to study for a Masters or PhD by Research at UPM for the Second Semester 2023/2024.

  2. Applications are also open to existing UPM students who are currently enrolled in Masters or PhD by Research and fulfil the following criteria:
    1. Registered as a UPM student;
    2. Not exceed 3 semesters for Master and 5 semesters for PhD during at the time of the application;
    3. The study status must be “Continue” while the application is made. Applications with “Thesis Submitted/Deferred/Dropped/Probation/Terminated” studies are not eligible to apply; and
    4. Not enrol in joint/dual/double/cotutelle degree programme.

  3. Each application must obtain approval from the Advisor/Supervisor and the Dean/Director of Faculty/School/Institute.

  4. This scholarship is funded by the Advisor/Supervisor/Member of the SupervisoryCommittee’s research grant. The grant must be valid and active for the term of the GRA appointment made in the semester for which it was applied, with a balance of at least RM15,000.00.

  5. The applicant must also attach the following documents with his/her application:
    1. Copy of the Research Grant Approval Letter; and
    2. Grant/project extension letter from the Research Management Centre (RMC), UPM (if any)

  6. Applicants are not a recipient of any other types of scholarship or financial assistance from other agencies/institutes/bodies and not engaged in any type of employment.


Incentives for Successful Applicants:

  1. Monthly allowance (depending on total no. of hours allocated for assisting in teaching).
    1. RM1,125.00 – 3 teaching hours per week.
    2. RM1,300.00 – 4 teaching hours per week.
    3. RM1,500.00 – 6 teaching hours per week.

  2. Waiver for some tuition fee for each semester for the duration of the scholarship amounting to the following: 


 Programme/Clusters Medical Science Social Science
Master RM1,200.00 RM900.00 RM700.00
PhD RM1,600.00 RM1,400.00 RM1,200.00 


Duration of The Assistanship

Master : Maximum 4th semesters of study
PhD : Maximum 6th semesters of study


Recipients Responsibilities

Under this scheme, each recipient is responsible:

  1. To comply with the regulations or laws and fulfil all requirements as stated in the programme of study;
  2. To successfully complete their studies;
  3. To assist in teaching/tutorial/practical activities/laboratory works for a period of not exceeding 6 hours per week including semester break;
  4. To assist in research works as assigned by the advisor/supervisor;
  5. To record daily attendance/log activity online through the student portal; and
  6. Others as will be specified in the offer letter.


Leave of Work

Recipients who are absent for 10 days or more in a month, shall not be eligible to receive allowance for that particular month.

  1. Complete the online application form via the student portal at
  2. Please ensure your Advisor/Supervisor and Dean/Director of Faculty/School/Institute support your application online before or latest by 22 January 2024.
  3. Incomplete or late applications will not be processed and any appeals will not be entertained.

If any information given is found to be incorrect, the scholarship will be terminated, and the student is required to refund the full amount of the fee and allowance given.

*Applicants who do not receive a response within three months from the closing date of the ad are considered unsuccessful.
