HISTORY, VISION AND MISSION

Background

The School of Graduate Studies (SGS) is a service and administrative centre established to assist postgraduate students throughout the process of their registration at UPM until graduation.

Initially, it was established as a Graduate Studies Unit in 1978, SPS then fully functioning as the Graduate School Office (GSO) in February 1993, to serve the growing population of postgraduate students at UPM.  In March 2002, it continued to flourish as it was officially renamed the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) and was established as a service centre which had a status equivalent to a faculty at the university. This entailed its bigger role in the coordination of all postgraduate programmes and activities at UPM.

SPS was conceptualized not only as a service centre to facilitate the general running of matters related to postgraduate students, but it was deemed to play a more active and crucial role in bolstering UPM’s status as a Research University (RU). Among the main roles of SPS are:

1. To develop policies for the University to produce competent graduates.
2. To cultivate and nurture research culture through an effective management of postgraduate activities.
3. To ensure the quality of postgraduate programmes are in line with the national education standrd, adhering to the guidelines of related accredititation bodies.
4. To increase the enrolment of international students to cater the institution's internationalization initiative.

Goals

In order to fulfil SGS’s role as planned during its inception, our goals are as follows:

1. Empowering postgraduate programs.
2. Strengthen the management of postgraduate students.
3. Increase the quantity and quality of research results.
4. Improving the quality of thesis publication.
5. To produce holistic graduates.

 

Vision

In line with UPM’s vision, SGS’s vision is to be a leading graduate school of international standing.

 

Mission

The mission of SGS is to ensure that we provide the best programmes which prepare students for the rigours of postgraduate study and the challenges of academia.  SGS also plans to be the leading School of Graduate Studies in Malaysia and in the region by providing a conducive academic environment and friendly customer services.
