Briefing Session for New UPM Postgraduate Students: Welcome to the UPM Family!

Serdang, 14 February 2014: Approaching the eve of new semester, SGS held a briefing session for the new intake of students. This event was held following two weeks of registration period. The main aim was to share important information relating to the students postgraduate studies in UPM and also addressing important issues faced by them.

Registration started as early as 9:00 a.m. and 700 students attended the session. The session was officiated with a welcoming speech delivered by the Dean of SGS, Prof. Dr. Bujang Kim Huat. Accompanying him on the stage was Deputy Dean, Prof. Dr. Zulkarnain Zainal and Prof. Dr. Nor Aini Ab. Shukor. Other guests included Senior Assistant Registrar, Mr. Anuar Shah Bali Mahomed and Assistant Registrars from each section under SGS.

“I am glad that all of you are becoming part of the UPM family, and I look forward to getting to know you all better,” said Prof. Dr. Bujang.

In his speech, the Dean introduced to the student about each section and its respective function. He also introduced two student organisations and its committee members, Peer Support Group (PSG) and UPM International Student Association (UPMISA) to the audience.

The session continued with a presentation on UPM Graduate Studies Rules by Deputy Dean, Prof. Dr. Zulkarnain Zainal. The 13-minute video explained about the basic underlying rules and regulations governing postgraduate studies in UPM. Another Deputy Dean, Prof. Dr. Nor Aini Ab. Shukor explained the Putra Sarjana learning support programme. It is designed to help graduate students in UPM to become more holistic. UPM is also the only university in Malaysia which dedicated significant amount of resources for such programme.   

Towards the end of the session, a Q&A session was held. Accommodation and graduate studies rules were the main topics being discussed. Overall, the programme was held successfully and students are expected to gain useful insights prior to the start of their academic journey.
