UPM PhD Student Wins Best of The Best In Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition 2018

A typical dissertation might contain more than 50,000 words and would take hours to present. What if you have only three minutes? A Universiti Putra Malaysia student has won the Best of the Best category in the Malaysian Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition this year.

Yasmin Mustapha Kamil, a 29-year-old PhD student from the Faculty of Engineering, beat 61 other entrants from 22 local universities at the academic competition held at Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), Perak on June 27, 2018.

The winning 3MT presentation is entitled “You can no longer hide from us now, Dengue!” which summarized her work on a label-free tapered optical fiber based sensor for quantitative sensing of Dengue II E proteins. Her supervisor is Dr. Muhammad Hafiz Abu Bakar of the Faculty of Engineering.

The winner was awarded RM1,500 in cash and a certificate. Yasmin will be representing Malaysia at the International 3MT competition in Brisbane, Australia on September 27, 2018.

The 3MT competition was launched in 2008 at the University of Brisbane as a means for graduate students to present their research in three minutes, using only one presentation slide. The challenge is in effectively communicating complicated information to the panel of judges and the wider audience in an engaging way.

Yasmin also won the first prize in the engineering category, garnering RM1,500 in cash prize and a certificate.

The second and third contestants from UPM are Clement Wong Kiing Fook and Nor Tutiaini Ab. Wahid with their 3MT title presentation “Going Bananas! The Frantic Tug-of-War Between Microbes” and “You Asked For It! Problem Posing Instructional Strategy (PPIS)”, supervised by Dr. Dzarifah Mohamed Zulperi and Dr. Othman Talib.
