SERDANG, August 15 : Some 1,620 students from public universities relished their moments of a lifetime when they were commissioned as young military officers during a Commissioning Ceremony for Reserved Officer Training Unit (ROTU) which was held in full military panacea at Universiti Putra Malaysia here.
His Royal Highness the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, who is also UPM Chancellor, graced the 34th Commissioning Ceremony of the Reserved Officer Training Unit which carried the theme ‘Watan Mendaulat Nusa’. (upholding nation's sovereignty).
Also present at the ceremony were Selangor Menteri Besar, YAB Mohamed Azmin Ali; Armed Forces Chief General Tan Sri Dr. Haji Zulkifeli Mohd Zin; chiefs of the three branch military services and UPM Vice-Chancellor who is also UPM ROTU Commandant, Colonel (Honorary) Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohd Fauzi Ramlan.
Sultan Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah who inspected the guard-of-honour, led by Best Cadet Officer (Army), Junior Under Officer Muhammad Syahiran Abd Sukor from UPM, received a salute from 24 detachments of ROTU cadets from 18 universities in the country, held at the UPM ROTU marching field.
The ceremony to present the credentials was held at the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Culture and Arts Centre of UPM.
In his royal address, the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah expressed his gratitude and congratulated ROTU young officers, hoping that their military acumen and knowledge gained during their three months’ training with ROTU could be fully utilized and put into practice when they were absorbed into the unit.
“I am very proud to witness our youths who are doing their academic study at higher learning institutions yet standing proud in full military regalia today.
“And I could sense how proud the country is to have such young people who are not only knowledgeable but possess good characters and very patriotic indeed to continue contributing towards the country’s development,” he said.
The Sultan said, they could contribute to Malaysia's well-being and defence in the face of any threats from inside and outside the country. - UPM
