SERDANG, August 17 – Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and University of Chulalongkorn, Thailand, signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to pave the way for exchange of academic staff and students to strengthen research in the field of Biotechnology.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic And International) of UPM, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mad Nasir Samsudin said the MoA encompassed the exchange of academic staff and students at post-graduate and master degree levels as well as development programmes for oversea studies.
“As one of the renowned research universities in Malaysia, UPM has always been focussing on identifying future researches with the aim of developing and promoting those viable ones as well as Science and Technology.
“Ten UPM students and officials will be sent for this programme at the start of the new semester which will begin soon.
“This effort enables both universities to begin its network of cooperation in related fields in Science and Biotechnology.
“UPM has always emphasized on the needs to identify researches for the future and we are happy with this collaboration with one of Asia’s top universities,” he told a Press Conference at the MoA signing ceremony.
UPM was represented by Prof. Datuk Dr. Mad Nasir while Chulalongkorn University was represented by its Dean of Science Faculty, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Polkit Sangvanich.
Prof. Datuk Dr. Mad Nasir also said students picked for this exchange programme will have to undergo a semester-long study programme.
“This programme will help to expose our students to the different cultures and ways of learning in a foreign university,” he said.
A seminar, entitled “Workshop on Biotechnology of Biomass Utilization for ASEAN Development” was held on August 16 at the Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, UPM, to coincide with the signing ceremony.
Eight researchers from UPM and eight others from Chulalongkorn University were involved in the workshop as speakers. – UPM.
