KUALA LUMPUR – The Institute of Halal Food Research (IPPH), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), has succeeded in marketing HaFYS Porcine DNA Detection Assay, a system to trace pig DNA, in the global market.
IPPH researcher, Prof. Dr. Suhaimi Mustafa said the kit, invented in 2011, was licensed exclusively to DxNA LLC, a company in the USA for use on PCR GeneSTAT machines.
“With the license, the product can be commercialized abroad. At present, the kit is marketed in countries in Europe as well as West Asia,” he told a Press Conference on Putra Cipta at Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) at the KL Convention Centre.
With the kit, Prof. Dr. Suhaimi added that the results on pig DNA test could be obtained within one hour after it is analyzed, with the results placed on the screen at the kit frontal.
“It will save a lot of time and this method will get rid of doubts that the samples might have been tampered with by third party in tracing pig content,” he said.
As the machine is portable, tests could be carried out easily and accurately, anywhere, he added.
“The difference between this system and other DNA testing is that it is a closed system which does not require DNA extradition,” he said.
“HaFYS and PCR GeneSTAT systems show sensitivity and DNA technological accuracy in tracing the presence of pig DNA although the pig content might be as low as 0.001 per cent and it also possesses features like easy handling. In addition, it does not require the rigid DNA extradition,” he added.
The kit was previously developed, together with the late Prof. Datuk Dr. Yaakob Che Man and UPM post-graduate students.
Meanwhile, Development Director of Pembangunan Perniagaan Kaysha Kencana Sdn. Bhd., Shamsul Bahrin Abdul Aziz said companies and halal certification bodies in South East Asia should embark on a proactive step to detect and control the presence of swine content in products with halal certificates.
“The probability of having pig content in products, whether it is done intentionally or unintentionally, is high due to the supply chain which is getting more complex. But this halal kit technology will assist the relevant parties to carry out the detection process accurately and easily,” he said.- UPM
