ACADEMIC REQUIREMENT






DOCTORAL (PHD) DEGREE PROGRAMME 

1. The applicant should possess:
    (a) a Master Degree (by coursework) in a relevant field with a minimum grade average of B, or
    (b) a Master Degree by research in a relevant field.

2. Admission into the programme is subjected to any other requirement specified by the Faculty/Institute.

3. An applicant from a local public university who is in the final semester of his masters study programme may be considered for provisional admission provided that his latest CGPA or its equivalent academic result satisfies the graduate programme admission requirements.







MASTERS DEGREE PROGRAMME

1. The applicant should possess a Bachelor’s degree (with honors) in a relevant field with a minimum CGPA of 3.000, or

2. The applicant who has insufficient academic qualification can be admitted into the programme subjected to any other requirement specified by the Faculty/Institute.

3. An applicant from a local public university who is in the final semester of his undergraduate study programme may be considered for provisional admission provided that his latest CGPA or its equivalent academic result satisfies the graduate programme admission requirements.



CONVERSION FROM MASTERS TO DOCTORAL DEGREE PROGRAMME

1.(1) If the application is successful, the student is required to comply with all requirement for a doctoral degree including requirements:

  1. submit a thesis for examination at the end of the study;
  2. comply with any other specific requirements of his relevant Graduate Programme as specified by the Senate;
  3. complete a minimum of 9 credits of courses; and pass both parts of the Comprehensive Examination.

(2) An independent committee shall be appointed by the Faculty, School or Institute to evaluate the application for conversion and this committee shall make its recommendations to the Dean through the Faculty, School or Institute for consideration by the University Graduate Studies Committee.

(3) The student applying for the conversion must:

  1. have completed at least one semester but not more than two semesters. Application made after two semesters will not be considered;
  2. have completed the coursework requirement (including SPS5903- Seminar Research Proposal) of the programme and obtained a minimum CGPA of 3.750;
  3. have produced the following based on research conducted during candidacy:
    1. Published or accepted journal article in a CIJ (Scopus/ERA/JCR); or
    2. Filed for a patent / copyright (software-based) / industrial design / printed circuit board / utility innovation; or
    3. Students in the social sciences must published chapter in book under the publisher list of Thomson Reuters Web of Science (WoS) / University Publisher / Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka / publisher recognized and listed under Majlis Penerbitan Ilmiah Malaysia (MAPIM).
  4. submit an extended research proposal that meets the scope of a doctoral degree; And

 

(4)The Chairman of the Supervisory Committee shall write a report to verify that the student:

  1. has the ability to integrate knowledge of research and theories pertaining to issues that are fundamental to the field of study;
  2. demonstrates critical, analytical and independent thinking skills; and
  3. has a good understanding of relevant research design and methodology.

(5) The Faculty, School or Institute shall appoint an independent committee. The committee shall be comprised of a minimum three members, with the Coordinator of Graduate Studies of the Faculty, School or Institute, as the Chairman of the committee.

(6) The independent committee in paragraph (c) shall:

  1. evaluate the extent to which the Masters research has progressed, and the proposal for the doctoral research via a seminar presentation;
  2. advise the student of areas to be examined;
  3. submit a comprehensive report to the Dean through the Faculty, School or Institute highlighting the merits and achievements of the student that will support or justify the conversion.

(7) If the conversion is approved within the first seven (7) weeks of the semester, the conversion shall take effect immediately. If the conversion is approved after the first seven weeks of the semester the conversion shall be effective in the following semester.
