This graduate program in Ethnic Studies was created in response to the government's appeal for complete advancement not only in the physical and economic spheres, but also in politics, administration, science, technology, and social issues. In accordance with that, it was developed to fulfil program objectives in accordance with the goals of WKB 2030 and SDG 2030, as well as the UPMKB Engineering Plan 2022.

This topic of Ethnic Studies is offered at the UPM Bintulu Campus since it is located in the Borneo Islands, which are shared by three countries: Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei Darussalam. Furthermore, the Ethnic Studies Field has its own principles that enable scholars to investigate the uniqueness of ethnic variety and the culture of ethnic minorities.
