INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE

Industrial or occupational hygiene is a field or niche under Occupational Safety and Health. However, this field in itself is a specialized expertise. In short, the industrial hygiene is a science and the arts that focuses on the anticipation, identification, evaluation, and control of environmental factors (such as noise, radiation, extreme temperatures, chemicals, biological pollution, etc.) or stress in the workplace. Industrial hygiene includes the development of preventive and corrective measures in the pursuit of health hazards through a regulatory hierarchy.

As such, the industrial hygienist is one of the expertise of occupational health and safety professionals who harmonize knowledge in various disciplines. In general, practitioners anticipate and identify the various types of work, operations or processes, then make quantitative assessments through monitoring (measurement) of rates or increased exposure to hazards that are the focus. Next, effective methods of control over potentially life-threatening hazards and health will be determined, planned, implemented and subsequently monitored for effectiveness.
