Social gerontology is an academic discipline focussing on social, economic, cultural and political aspects of ageing that affect the well-being of older people. It is based on a multidisciplinary approach in understanding the psycho-social processes of growing older and the socio-economic impacts of ageing on older people families and the society. Research and development in this field contribute towards social-economic policies, legislations and programmes in managing ageing populations including long-term care, social security, social supports, intergenerational relations and exchange, work and retirement, social inequality, gender and ageing, the stereotypes of old age and end of life issues.
