DUAL PHD DEGREE PROGRAMME

The Dual PhD degree offered by the University of Alberta (UAlberta) and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) offers an excellent opportunity for their students to obtain a world-class PhD degree. Upon completion of the programme, students will be awarded with two certificates, one from UPM and one from UAlberta.

How long does it take to complete the programme?

The programme takes three to four years (six to eight semesters) to complete. Students are required to spend at least one (1) year at UPM and six (6) months at UAlberta.

The students will be working with renowned professors from both UPM and UAlberta, and have access to the state of the art laboratories or research centers which are furnished with the latest equipment and tools to generate high quality and impactful research outputs. This enriches the students’ education through diverse intellectual perspectives, active participation in new culture, as well as critical and firsthand engagement with local and global challenges. The cost of gaining an overseas experience through this programme is also much lower compared to what it would cost to enroll on an overseas PhD programme.

How much is the tuition fee?

Tuition fee if enrolled at UPM

Local Students	RM 3,500.00 per semester
International Students	RM 8,000.00 per semester

Tuition fee if enrolled at UAlberta

Tuition fee will be paid by the host supervisor at UAlberta

How much is the processing fee and how do I pay?

The processing fee for international students is USD63.60 (or equivalent). For local applicants, the processing fee is MYR63.60.

What are the entry requirements?

A Master’s degree from UPM, or any degree from any equivalent University. The applicant's Bachelor degree’s Grade Point Average (GPA) or degree level should normally be equivalent to an Upper Second-Class Honours.

You are also required to fulfil the minimum English language requirement. Each discipline will have its own requirements. Normally, you need to obtain at least a level of Band 6.5 for IELTS.
