Virology is a branch of microbiology that deals with viruses and virus-like agents such as prions and viroids, and diseases they cause. Research in virology focuses on the aspects of virus structure, classification and evolution, ways virus infect and exploit host cells for replication, interaction with host organism physiology and immune system, viral disease, pathogenicity, techniques of virus isolation and culture, methods of diagnosis and therapy of viral diseases. The major areas of research include molecular virology, virus-mediated gene transfer, gene therapy, cancer-causing viruses, viral vaccines, vaccination, and anti-viral chemotherapy.
