7 Interesting Facts About Malaysia

Malaysia holds many fascinating and sometimes surprising facts, even for its own citizens. This article uncovers seven unique facts about our beloved country that many may have never heard before.

1. Jalur Gemilang was designed by an architect
The Malaysian flag, Jalur Gemilang, was designed by Mohamed bin Hamzah, an architect from Johor. His design was selected from 373 entries in a competition organised by the Federal Legislative Council.

2. The national anthem ‘Negaraku’ originated from Perak’s state song
Before independence, Malaysia did not have a national anthem. A competition attracted 512 submissions, but none were deemed suitable. Eventually, Tunku Abdul Rahman chose Perak’s state anthem, “Allah Lanjutkan Usia Sultan”, and wrote new lyrics to create “Negaraku.”

3. “Aurea Chersonesus” – the oldest known name for Malaysia
In the writings of a geographer from Ptolemy’s era, Malaysia was referred to as “Aurea Chersonesus,” meaning “peninsula of gold.” This name dates back to around 150 AD.

4. Borneo — the third-largest island in the world
Borneo, shared by Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei, and Indonesia, covers about 743,000 km². It is the world’s third-largest island after Greenland and New Guinea and is home to one of the largest remaining tropical rainforests.

5. Malaysia has changed its time zone eight times
Malaysia’s standard time has been altered several times in history: in 1932 it was advanced by 20 minutes, in 1941 by another 10 minutes, and in 1942 it was moved forward by two hours to match Tokyo time. After the war, the time was reverted to its pre-1942 setting. The last change was on January 1, 1982, when Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad moved the clock 30 minutes forward to align with Sabah and Sarawak; Singapore also adopted the same change on that day.

6. Putrajaya has the world’s largest roundabout
The Persiaran Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah in Putrajaya holds the record for the largest roundabout in the world, measuring 2.2 miles in length and approximately 3.5 km in diameter.

7. Malaysia’s highways are longer than the Earth’s circumference
Malaysia’s total highway length is about 65,877 km — longer than Earth’s circumference, which is around 40,075 km.
