What Is Cyberbullying and How to Deal With It
Cyberbullying is a form of bullying that occurs through the use of digital technology such as smartphones, computers, or tablets. It can take place on social media platforms, messaging apps like WhatsApp, online games, emails, and more. Cyberbullying happens when someone uses digital channels to insult, threaten, embarrass, or harm another person repeatedly and intentionally. Examples of cyberbullying include spreading false rumors, sending hateful messages, sharing embarrassing photos or videos without permission, or impersonating someone to damage their reputation.
One of the key differences between traditional bullying and cyberbullying is that it can happen at any time and anywhere. Victims can be bullied even in the comfort of their own homes, which should be a safe space. More concerning, cyberbullying content posted online often remains there permanently and can be spread quickly to a wide audience, leading to deeper and longer-lasting impacts.
The effects of cyberbullying can be very serious. It may affect the victim’s mental and emotional well-being. Victims may feel persistently sad, anxious, ashamed, unworthy, and isolated. They might withdraw from friends, avoid going to school, or show changes in behavior. In more severe cases, cyberbullying can lead to depression, extreme anxiety, or self-harm.
What can be done? If you are a victim, it’s important to talk to someone you trust—like a parent, teacher, school counselor, or a close friend. Do not stay silent. Keep evidence of the bullying, such as screenshots of messages, photos, or posts. Use the block and report features available on apps or social media platforms to stop the bully. If your safety is at risk, seek help from the authorities.
If you witness someone being bullied online, don’t stay silent. Offer support, encourage them to speak to an adult, and never spread or share harmful content.
With education, awareness, and collective action, we can reduce cyberbullying and create a safer, healthier, and more supportive digital community.
