Effects of Bullying

Bullying affects not only the victims, but also the bullies and the witnesses. It can lead to various short-term and long-term problems.

🧍‍♀️ Children Who Are Bullied
Victims of bullying often experience emotional, physical, academic, and mental health effects. These include depression, anxiety, feelings of loneliness, sleep and eating disorders, and a loss of interest in activities they once enjoyed. These effects can persist into adulthood. Physically, they may complain of unexplained illnesses, while academically, their performance may decline, they may skip school frequently, or even drop out. In extreme cases, victims may respond with serious acts of violence. For example, 12 out of 15 school shooters in the U.S. during the 1990s were known to have been bullied.

👊 Children Who Bully
Bullies are also at risk of facing major problems in life. They are more likely to be involved in substance abuse, physical fights, dropping out of school, and early sexual behavior. As adults, they may become involved in criminal activities, domestic violence, or become abusive parents.

👁️ Bystanders of Bullying
Witnesses or bystanders are also affected. They are at higher risk of experiencing emotional distress, depression, and anxiety. Some may turn to substance use as a coping mechanism. Their academic performance can also be negatively impacted due to emotional stress or fear of attending school.

⚠️ Bullying and Suicide
Although bullying is often linked to suicide cases, it is not the sole cause. However, it does increase the risk when combined with other factors such as existing depression, family issues, or trauma. The risk becomes greater if the victim lacks support from family, friends, or teachers.
