Factors Causing Corruption (According to the Sharia Perspective)

1. Low Level of Integrity

  • Individuals lack trustworthiness, honesty, and responsibility.

  • Easily tempted to abuse power or accept bribes.

  • Weak moral principles and work ethics.

2. Financial Pressure

  • Inadequate or low income.

  • Rising cost of living.

  • Corruption is seen as an easy way to meet financial needs.

3. Lack of Religious Knowledge

  • Unaware that corruption is a major sin in Islam.

  • Lack of understanding of religious teachings on justice and the prohibition of taking others’ rights.

  • No awareness of the consequences of corruption in the hereafter.

4. Weak Law Enforcement

  • Inconsistent or ineffective legal action.

  • Corruption still rampant despite the existence of agencies like the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

  • MACC statistics: 851 cases in 2021 increased to 909 in 2022 – indicates prevention is still insufficient.

5. Lack of Moral Education in Families and Communities

  • Moral values and integrity are not emphasized from a young age.

  • Families fail to instill anti-corruption values.

  • Schools and communities do not actively build a culture of honesty and accountability.
