Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) is one of Malaysia’s leading research universities, with a long history of contributing to the development of higher education, particularly in agriculture, science, and technology. UPM began as a small institution known as the School of Agriculture Malaya, which was established in 1931 in Serdang, Selangor. Subsequently, in 1971, the college developed into a full-fledged university known as Universiti Pertanian Malaysia. This transformation demonstrated the university’s efforts to adapt to developments in the economy, technology, and the country’s workforce needs.

As education and research continued to develop rapidly, the university was renamed Universiti Putra Malaysia in 1997. This rebranding reflected UPM’s role as a more comprehensive university that was no longer limited to the field of agriculture. The new name also represented the university’s aspiration to expand its contributions across a wide range of academic disciplines.

Today, UPM is recognised as one of Malaysia’s leading research universities, with strengths in various fields such as agricultural sciences, medicine, engineering, information technology, social sciences, and many others. Its main campus is located in Serdang, Selangor, while UPM also has a campus in Bintulu, Sarawak.

UPM is also actively involved in research related to current issues and the needs of society. Its commitment to innovation, research, and academic excellence has made UPM an important institution in the development of knowledge and human capital in Malaysia. From an agricultural school in 1931, UPM has grown into a university that carries a strong tradition of knowledge, research, and innovation at both the national and international levels.
