Mr MoleC: The Silent Hero of Sustainable Agriculture Without Chemical Pesticides

In an effort to reduce dependence on chemical pesticides in the agricultural sector, a proud local innovation has been introduced by Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), known as Mr MoleC. This product is a science-based pest repellent designed to protect crops without killing insects or harming the environment. It emerges as a response to the growing need for safer, more sustainable, and eco-friendly agricultural practices.

Mr MoleC was developed through long-term research by a UPM researcher who recognized the urgent need for alternatives to conventional pesticides. Unlike chemical pesticides that aggressively kill insects, Mr MoleC functions as a bio-repellent that disrupts and confuses the senses of pests, thereby preventing them from damaging crops. This approach is more ethical as it does not harm beneficial insects such as bees and other pollinators that are crucial to maintaining ecological balance.

In addition, the use of Mr MoleC helps reduce soil and water pollution commonly associated with excessive chemical pesticide application. The product leaves no toxic residue on agricultural produce, making it safer for consumers and improving the overall quality of food produced. From the farmers’ perspective, this innovation offers a more comfortable and safer method of crop protection, as it does not emit strong odors and poses fewer health risks.

To ensure that this innovation benefits a wider audience, Mr MoleC has been commercialized through a university-established start-up company. Although it still faces challenges such as market acceptance and certification, the potential of Mr MoleC in supporting sustainable agriculture is significant.

In conclusion, Mr MoleC is not merely an agricultural product but a symbol of local research excellence in addressing food safety and environmental sustainability. This innovation demonstrates that green technology can provide effective solutions without compromising human well-being or the natural environment.
