
October 10th 2024, Serdang – The School of Graduate Studies (SGS), through the Putra Sarjana Learning Support Program, organized a seminar on Enhancing Intercultural Communication conducted by Professor Dr. Alyani Ismail in person at the Thinker Space 2.0, Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia. The two-hour seminar was part of the Putra Sarjana SPS Seminar Series, which provides various information, tips, and skills to UPM postgraduate students. The positive response from students and participation from students outside the university reflected the significance of the topic.
The objective of this seminar is to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively communicate across diverse cultural contexts. By exploring the impact of cultural differences on communication styles, non-verbal cues, and conflict resolution, the seminar aims to increase cultural awareness where it help participants recognize and appreciate cultural diversity and how it influences communication. By the end of the seminar, participants should feel more confident in their ability to navigate intercultural interactions and build positive, respectful relationships across cultures.
Professor Dr. Alyani Ismail has shared her knowledge through a simple PowerPoint presentation with few proposal document as an examples, which captured the students’ attention more than usual. An active Q&A session took place proving the seminar was indeed an interactive and successful one. After a heated session of clarifications, the talk came to an end at 12.00 noon. Attendees even had a one-to-one personal discussion with the guest speaker to understand the session even better.
