Rain to Resource: Rainwater Harvesting Project Strengthens Green Sustainability Initiative at SGS

July 15th, 2026 – The School of Graduate Studies (SGS), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) continues to reinforce its commitment towards environmental sustainability through the strengthening of the “Rain to Resource: Rainwater Harvesting Project”, an initiative introduced in 2023 as part of the School’s continuous green sustainability efforts. The project supports water conservation practices through the collection and reuse of rainwater within the SGS compound.

The programme was officiated and attended by the Deputy Dean of Admission, Institutional Relations and Financial Aid, Prof. Dr. Nitty Hirawaty Kamarulzaman, reflecting the strong support and commitment of the SGS management towards green sustainability initiatives. The programme included a briefing on the functionality of the rainwater harvesting system and a sharing session on water conservation and green sustainability practices delivered by the Assistant Engineer of SGS, Mr. Izzat Rabani Mazli, followed by a walkabout session around the rainwater harvesting system area to observe the operational components of the project, including the storage tanks and solar-powered water pump installed within the SGS compound.

Through this initiative, rainwater collected from the building rooftop is reused for landscape maintenance purposes such as plant watering, area cleaning, and greenery upkeep around SGS. In addition, the project incorporates the use of solar panels to generate electricity for the water pump system, contributing towards electricity saving and reducing energy consumption during watering activities. Periodic inspections and maintenance activities are also carried out to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of the system, including tank inspections, filter cleaning, and system maintenance works.

This initiative reflects SGS’s ongoing commitment towards sustainable campus practices, environmental conservation, and the promotion of green awareness in support of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).
