The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) 2019 Competition of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) was successfully held on March 19, 2019. Auditorium Radin Umar, Faculty of Engineering became the venue for the final round of the 3MT 2019 competition and the event, organised by UPM’s School of Graduate Studies. This year 23 PhD students participated in the Competition, and 12 finalists were shortlisted to compete for three prizes.
Developed by The University of Queensland (UQ), Australia the exercise cultivates students’ academic, presentation, and research communication skills. The competition supports their capacity to effectively explain their research in three minutes, in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience.
Judges for the contest, headed by Emeritus Prof. Dato’ Dr. Sheikh Omar Abdul Rahman, also comprised Datin Dr. Mardziah Hayati Abdullah, Dr. Azlan Shah Hussain, Dr. Christoph Baumann, and Mr. Ally Iskandar Mohd Mardzi.
The singular honoured guest was Prof. Dr. M Iqbal Saripan (Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic and International) who also officiated the event. The competition was also attended by Deans of Faculties and Directors of Institutes.
First prize winner was Nurliyana Mohamad from the Faculty of Science and she received RM1000.00 with her presentation entitled “Fish Investigator: Understanding Vibrio Infection in Cultured Fish”. Nur Sharmila Sharip from the Institute of Tropical Forestry and Forest and Nurfatimah Mohd Thani from the Faculty of Engineering with their presentation entitled “Nanocellulose Composite Prosthetic Joint” and “Water, but Better!” walked away with the 2nd and 3rd prize awards of RM800.00 and RM600.00, in that order.
For the rest of the participants, each received a consolation prize of RM100. The event started at 8.00 am and lasted until noon.
