Pulau Pinang, 18 May 2017. UPM took home the second prize for Engineering and third prize for Social Science at the Malaysian 2017 Three Minute Thesis (3MT) national competition held at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) here today.
The competition received 56 entries from universities all over Malaysia. Three PhD students, each from Science and Technology, Social Science, and Engineering categories represented UPM.
Nurliyana Abdul Raof won the second prize in the Engineering category with her presentation entitled “Transformer Goes Green”. Her research focuses on the development of bio-based esters for transformer oil application and works towards a fundamental understanding of esters oxidation behaviour and moisture dynamics in the transformer. The ultimate aim of her research is to produce green and environmental friendly transformer oil for clean and sustainable energy transmission. The supervisor of Nurliyana is Prof. Dr Robiah Yunus of the Faculty of Engineering.
Nur Fatihah Shaari took the third prize in the Social Science category for her research entitled “Fly and Help Keep Mother Earth Safe!”. It is a study about the willingness of Malaysian air travellers to pay for voluntary carbon offset projects. Her supervisor is Assoc. Prof. Dr Abdul Rahim Abdul Samad of Faculty of Economics and Management.
The third contestant from UPM is Keeren S. Rajoo. Supervised by Prof. Dr. Ahmad Ismail, he presented his research on determining the toxicity of Malaysian landfills, entitled “The Deadly Truth About Rubbish”. Keeren has represented UPM in several public speaking and debate competitions, some of his achievements being second at the Kenyalang Debate Open and champion of Walailak Debate Championship at Thailand.
