Joint / Dual / Double Degree Programme

The UPM International Collaborative Programme (UPM-ICP) is a programme jointly developed by UPM with several top universities to promote and strengthen bilateral collaboration between UPM and its partners, particularly in the areas of research and joint supervision.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
  • Have obtained a full offer of admissions (Master/PhD) to Universiti Putra Malaysia
  • Enrolled in Full-TimeResearch-based programme
  • Currently in the First or Second semester of studies, with ‘Continue’ status
  • Fulfill the English language requirements (English language proficiency score equivalent to B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR); or as required by each partner university. The list of test scores accepted are listed here

APPLICATION PROCEDURES

1.

 Apply for the normal Masters/PhD programme and obtain an offer of admissions to UPM

2.

Identify a supervisor from the partner university that are relevant to your field of study. They must have agreed to collaborate with your supervisor from UPM to supervise your proposed research project

3.

 Submit the application documents to the Institutional Relations and Financial Aid Unit via email
  • Duly accomplished UPM-ICP Application Form
  • A certified copy of Bachelor / Master degree certificate;
  • A certified copy of Bachelor / Master degree transcript;
  • A certified copy of Identification Card/Passport;
  • A certified copy of TOEFL/IELTS result(s);
  • Two copies of UPM-ICP Referee's Report;
  • Research proposal;
  • Letter of scholarship/sponsorship award (if any);

Do I need to register as a student at the partner university where UPM signed the ICP agreement?
Yes, you need to register in person at the partner university and fulfil the residential requirement.

What are the programme requirements?
Students enrolling in this programme may have the following advantages:

  • Register every semester at both universities. UPM requires that students register every semester and pay the fees at the beginning of the semester, unless stated otherwise.
  • Complete the credit requirements of a minimum of 3 credits of Research Methodology (those registered in First Semester 2024/2025 onwards).
  • Complete other courses as required by the faculty or supervisory committee.
  • Nominate the members of the supervisory committee. The supervisor at the host university must be included when a nomination is submitted to SGS.
  • Submit the progress report (GS-11) at the end of every semester. The progress report must be presented to both supervisors prior to submission to SGS.
  • Pass the Comprehensive Examination within 4 semesters of enrolment (PhD students only). The process can be done either at UPM or a partner university, subject to agreement by both supervisors.
  • Produce a thesis and defend it in the oral examination (viva voce). For double degrees, two theses will be required, and two Vivas will be conducted.
  • Produce journal papers (1 paper accepted/published for Master or 2 papers accepted/published for PhD).

How will the viva be conducted?

Joint/Dual Degree :

 

 

 

 

 

 

Only one viva will be conducted, either at UPM or the partner university. The examination process will be arranged by the university where the thesis is submitted. A joint Examination Committee will be formed, consisting of:

• 1 examiner from UPM
• 1 examiner from the host university
• 1 examiner from an independent university

For the Joint PhD programme with the University of Newcastle Australia, the viva will be conducted at UPM, and therefore the thesis must also be submitted to UPM.

Double Degree:

 

The student will be required to produce two theses. One thesis will be submitted to UPM and the partner university. Each university will form a separate Joint Examination Committee to examine the thesis.

How long does the programme conversion process take?
The conversion process for the ICP programme may take 1-4 months, as the process requires approval from the two universities.

7.

 

When is the deadline of application?
Application is open throughout the year. However, there are only two intakes per year, which are in October (First semester) and March (Second semester). Please refer to the application dates here

8.

 

 

I was granted an exemption from the English Language requirement. Am I still required to take an English test and achieve a score equivalent to B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)?
The conversion process for the ICP programme may take 1-4 months, as the process requires approval from the two universities.

9.

 

I received a provisional offer. Am I eligible to apply for the UPM-ICP programme?
You need to obtain a full offer prior to applying for the programme conversion, to secure an admission at the partner universities.

UPM COTUTELLE PhD PROGRAMME

1.

 

 

 

Contact the Institutional Relations Unit of the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) to check your eligibility and obtain information about the programme. Students wishing to apply must meet the following requirements:

  • Only first year PhD students are eligible to apply.
  • The current registration status is “Continue”.
  • The student must have obtained a minimum score of 6.0 for IELTS or its equivalent (a higher score may be required by the Host university).

2.

Discuss the research proposal and obtain permission from your supervisor in UPM to join the programme. 

3.

 

 

 

 

Locate an overseas institution that offers a Cotutelle/Dual programme and identify potential Host supervisor. Check if the Host University has a Cotutelle or Dual PhD Policy and read the policy properly.
For your reference, the following universities have previously hosted UPM students under Cotutelle agreements:

  • Université Pierre-Et-Marie-Curie, France
  • University of Montpellier, France
  • University of Wollongong, Australia
  • University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, France
  • Agreenium, France

4.

Obtain confirmation from the potential Host supervisor to be part of the joint supervision committee.

5.

 

Ask if the Host University has a Cotutelle agreement template. If not, your UPM Supervisor may request the template from SGS. Please note that the Cotutelle agreement, including all approvals and negotiations, must be handled by the relevant faculty/institute/school in UPM and the Host University.

6.

Submit a formal application for Cotutelle programme to the Host University, and obtain an admission offer letter from the Host University.

7.

Download the ICP Application Form from the SGS website and complete the form.

  • A copy of your Master’s degree certificate and transcript
  • A copy of your passport
