Dangers of high cholesterol: what to do

High cholesterol is an increasingly concerning health problem and often occurs without any early symptoms. Many people are unaware of their cholesterol levels until serious complications such as heart attacks or strokes occur. Therefore, knowledge about high cholesterol and preventive measures is crucial for maintaining long-term health.

  • Quit smoking

Smoking damages blood vessels, increases bad cholesterol (LDL), and lowers good cholesterol (HDL), thereby raising the risk of heart disease.

  • Adopt a healthy diet

Consuming foods low in saturated fat and high in fiber—such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes—can help control cholesterol levels.

  • Exercise regularly

Physical activity helps reduce bad cholesterol and increase good cholesterol, while also maintaining heart health and an ideal body weight.

  • Manage and reduce body weight

Losing excess body weight can reduce the risk of high cholesterol and related metabolic health problems.

  • Seek medical advice

If lifestyle changes are not sufficient, medical check-ups and treatment are necessary to control cholesterol levels more effectively.

In conclusion, high cholesterol is a serious health issue that requires early awareness and proactive management. Adopting healthy lifestyle practices such as quitting smoking, maintaining a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and managing body weight can significantly reduce the risk of complications associated with high cholesterol. However, lifestyle changes alone may not always be sufficient, making regular medical check-ups and professional advice essential for effective cholesterol control. By taking timely preventive measures and seeking appropriate treatment when necessary, individuals can protect their heart health, prevent life-threatening conditions, and improve their overall quality of life in the long term.
