School of Graduate Studies Reading Book Campaign

May 8th, 2024, Serdang - This Reading Campaign aims to cultivate an informed and knowledgeable Malaysian society by making reading a culture, especially among the staff of the Graduate School, while also setting the best example for students. The suggested initiative for implementation by higher education institutions nationwide is to increase book review programs, talks on famous works, discourse, and debates on books containing high-level thinking. It is hoped that through such efforts, a vibrant reading atmosphere can counteract the prevalent culture of mediocrity among society today, characterized by a middle-of-the-road lifestyle full of entertainment and popular materials that are neither educational nor conducive to the development of a quality populace.

The first book review sharing session was initiated by Prof. Ts. Dr. Zuriati Zukarnain, Deputy Dean (Academic, Curriculum, and Data) of the Graduate School, with the book titled "Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen Covey. Among the 7 tips shared by Prof. Ts. Dr. Zuriati from the book are,

1. Be Proactive
2. Begin with the End in Mind
3. Put First Things First
4. Think Win/Win
5. Seek First To Understand, Then to Be Understood
6. Synergize
7. Sharpen the Saw

It is hoped that with this initiative, it will further enhance the interest in reading among staff so that the culture of reading can be adopted as a lifestyle and culture that will grow and spread like a virus within the university framework and subsequently spread widely to the entire society, thus making Malaysians a reading society of the world.
