UPM 3MT

WHAT IS 3MT?

The Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) 3MT competition cultivates students’ academic, presentation, and research communication skills. The Australia-found competition is now being held annually in universities across Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, and many other countries.

3MT requires you to describe and explain your thesis succinctly within three minutes in language that is accessible to an intelligent lay audience. This provides you with a great opportunity to practise your presentation skills, evaluate and devise a way to communicate the significance of your research (in simple terms) for the interested group of audience. Towards preparing for your viva, you might have people asking about the gist of your research– 3MT challenges you to articulate a brief yet coherent response in such situations. Such skills are greatly useful when it comes to securing job interviews or academic conversations.

ELIGIBILITY

  • PhD by Research students who have successfully passed their proposal defence (have not attended viva-voce).
  • PhD by Research students whose study status is still ACTIVE
  • PhD (by Coursework and Mixed Mode) and Master’s students are not eligible to compete.

RULES AND REGULATION

  • No additional props (e.g. costumes, musical instruments, laboratory equipment and animated backgrounds) are permitted during the presentation.
  • Presentations are to be spoken word (e.g. no poems, raps, or songs).
  • No additional electronic media (e.g. sound and video files) are permitted during the presentation.
